Summary:
This last section of this book is one is one of the more intense and fast going parts. in this section many important things happen. Kyler apologizes for what happen at the dance, she won a volley ball match, she catches her father about to do something to Angeline and she tells on her father. Yes she tells on him, she's speaks out the truth, what everyone already knew and for that she got something. Kyler apologizing is itself an explanation, therefore there is no information needed for that, and her winning a game does the same. But what needs explaining is Anke finding her father with Ange and her telling on him.
When Ange and Anke needed to get some information about government law for government law the two girls plan to meet at Anke's fathers office since he works there. Ange arrives there first and Anke second comes second because she was chatting with Rona. When Anke arrives in a hall on the same floor that her fathers office is on and she hears a small wine. She goes into her fathers office and she finds him "with a small smile leaning toward the armchair, zipper on its way down Angeline, her skirt tweaked, swelling closing one eye, pleading softly, no, no." When Anke sees this she screams no and her father is shocked. when Anke goes home she tell her sister what happened and that she will tell on her father. Her sister tells her brother and her brother, tells their mother, and they are frightened, warning her not to. When the father comes home he says sorry that he couldn't give Anke a ride, trying to play off what had just happened. He looks at her with daring eyes, and she looks back with dare me eyes. she calls him a liar when he says he was in a meeting. Then she tell all her family what he was trying to do and with that he throws a chair at her. she wakes up at the hospital with her mother by her side. The father is gone and wont be back, because Anke's mother saw the light and kicked him out, he was sent to prison and they burned his chair.
Quotation:
"she was supposed to be outside our house of horrors and I let her in."
Reaction:
This quote shows Anke's thoughts after she finds her father and Ange in the office. the kind of ironic part of this is that she never wanted to bring her in their lives she didn't like hanging out with Ange, she always wanted to stay away. Ange was the one who let herself in she always swooned over the father and lit up when she saw him. It was not Anke that cause this it was Ange, though it wasn't her fault in all ways, she just had more part in it then Anke.

Because I Am Furniture (pgs142-213)
Summary: In these pages Anke speaks about how Rona is the only one she tells things to. its not really that she wants to, but she just kind of feels like she has too, like its an obligation. Rona is Anke's best friend and they are not even in the same grade. they are friends through volleyball though even after and before playing and practicing their games they hang out, they even eat lunch together and walk the halls.
Even though the title of this novel is because i am furniture i feel as if the person who is represented as furniture is in actuality is the father. the reason why i feel this is because of how the father's chair is treated and how it is talked about. when the son gets mad at the father he takes it out on the chair and kicks it. Then when the father yells and hurts the daughter for wearing makeup she took a screw that was attached to the chair out. Every time the father's children get mad at the father they do something to the chair. The father and Anke are both represented as furniture but in different ways.
Quote: "And then the demon is gone, so i can mumble "sorry"" (pg 158)
Reaction: This quote is important because it shows how she is getting a voice and how she is able to notice her voice. She is able to talk to her sister and express her feelings. She rashes out to Yaicha when she interrupts her conversation with their mom and then she apologizes when she notices.

because i am furniture (pgs 214-285)
Summary: In this part of the novel Anke gets the surprise of her life as Kyler askes her out! He flashes her a grin, rubs a hand down his sleeve and speaks. "I was wondering if you were going to the harvest dance." well he kind of asked her out. She was nervous just like him and she panicked. She said she was going to go in a group with Rona because she didn't think she could just dance with one person all night. At the dance when they were finally dancing together something happened. They were both dancing, both of them excited, then anke feels something on her hip and they both pull back a little, both embarrassed.
Something else that happens is that Darren for the first time was watching Anke practice, though when she acknowledges him he leaves, so swiftly it was like he was never there. there is also more to this fraction of the story involing her father. after catching Yaicha, the sister, reading Cosmo, the father hit Yaicha across the face. With all that happens Anke steps into thought. Why doesn't her mother do anything, why doesn't somebody say something. Then she realizes that they choose not to anything, none of them.
Quotation: "So all the pressure is on me, the Youngest and Most Bothered"
Analysis: The quote above is important because it illustrates foreshadowing. If the brother, sister, and mother and definaly not the father tells she will have to.

Because I am Furniture (71- 140)
Summary:
In these pages of Because I am furniture by Thalia Chaltas, Anke writes about her father, her image and her friends. in the start of these pages she speaks about her father and his routine. He comes in, he shoves everything everywhere and then like nothing happened he leaves. This is his doing, this is how he expresses himeself. he comes in yelling at Yaicha then he leaves as swiftly as he came. She talks about her image and also her her feelings. When she was younger her grandmother had said to her "Nobody's going to buy you". Anke has brownish brown hair, a ponytail, a blemished Roman nose, a spagatti spotted tee, freakishly long legs and wooden earings from Yaichas trash. Yes according to that no one would buy her, but theres this guy you may sometime think about it. Kyler. He helped her when she was pushed in the hall, they have classes together and they like the same things, seems perfect, and maybe it will be one day. There is also interacttions with Angeline. In these pages Angeline continues to show her fondness for Anke's father. whenever he is around her mood is lightened and in a way so is his. He speaks to her and she to him but not like he would talk to his family, angry and mad, but friendly.
Quote:
"And i really think you can't read to someone like that without a little teeny bit of love." (pg 102)
Reaction:
In these pages Anke thinks back to when her father would read to her. When she was young he would read to her at night and even have a voice to match the characters, but now he is just there, in the house causing problems and seperation between the family. In this quote she ponders about how he could do that then and not show acts of love now?, how did he change?

Because I am Furniture pgs -1-70
Summary: In these pages of the novel we are introduced to mot of the characters. We meet the family, that includes Anke, the main character who was named after her mother, her sister Yaicha who was named after a song (pousette-dart band), her brother Darren named after a dead dead friend of thier parents, the father and the mother Anne. Then we meet some other characters that include friends like the coach, Roy, of the volley ball team, Angeline a family friend, Rona a tenth grader and Jed a senior. In the first pages we enter t he daily routine of this family. "When the garage door goes up he's home. We close up conversation and scuttle off like crabs each to our room-- Shut the door. Shut the door.Shut the door."(pg.4) Then later we enter more into Anke's social life. we find out that she has started to play on the volley ball team and made, she has a friend Rona who is one grade above her who she met within Volleyball and we find out that she has a senior firend, Jed, who she sleeps on the coach with after school and at times kisses. A more inner family social life involves the problems with her siblings and opinion of her family. Like when she makes a photo album with no pictures of her siblings or father and only pictures of her mother and her.
Quote: ""there are only pictures of you and mom!"(sister says) and i say to myself, Exactly." pg 66
Reaction: This quote shows how Anke has a closer relationship to her mother than everyone else in the house. She isn't exactly close to her mother but out of all her family thats who she prefers. Her sister and brother think Anke is a waste of space her father is a hyprocrite and her mother at times can be good to her.

The Unheard pg 200-256
Summary: In these last chapters of The Unheard a letter arrives from USAID. The letter noted that the clinic project had been approved, this project involved building a new ward, giving josh his own office, bring electricity, and getting a doctor. They made many plans and continued those that Jere had made long ago. The bigger space that they planned to have would help the village and having a real Doctor will do even better the villages only source of help about health was from the small clinic Jere, Josh and Patrick worked in and there medicine cabinet the size of a bathtub help medication for 50,000 people. The clinic project would be the best thing for the village and it will give josh the satisfaction that he is actually doing work in Africa instead of nothing at all. They drew model scales, calculated prices, list potential workers and created a construction schedule. They created a plan and intended to finish it and getting the letter gave hope for the plan.
Quote: "America is like heaven? Come on, it's insane as anyplace else. He should know the truth."
Raction: to Josh Amerirca was a different place, thats why he came to Africa. He came to Africa to escape his deafness. And in Africa he makes friends, experiences violence and difficulties that had nothing to do with his deafness. Africa is different for him and he learns that.

the unheard pgs 145-202
Summary: In these pages of the Unheard Josh experiences another traumatic event, his first being the man being dragged all over the village. It was already dark out, the moon wasn't in sight and a man comes into the clinic, the one Josh works in part time, with a boy in his hands. It was the man's son. The man came into the clinic and placed his fifteen year old son on a table. When the man came in he was immediately taken care of they examined the injury and explained what had happened. The boy had stole a fish from someone else's net in the river and so they "swung an ax through the back of his leg." The ax went through the skin and the muscles, and it stopped against the kneecap. But that was not the only problem. The clinic did not have the materials to amputate the leg and even if they did they did not have the capabilities to do so. but they did have a chance of gettting someone who could. they would just have to wait for the abulance whwen it came back around. When it did pass though it was full of fish and there was no space for the boy so josh who has started going though a fit of anger threw enough bags of fish out and yelled at the drivers.
Quote: "I turned my hearing aids off" pg 149
Reaction: Many times during the book Josh deliberatly turns of his hearing aids. He turns it off when he's sleeping, when there is no point of hearing anything, and when he is angry. Josh uses his disabliity to his advantge to get away.

The Unheard (107-145)
Summary:
In these pages of The Unheard Josh begins to feel fear. On Christmas eve a villager, Chitondo, had killed someone by punching him in the nose, breaking it in the process and leading it right into the other guys brain. Though, strangely, this is not why Josh was afraid, he was afraid of what happened to Chitondo afterwards. When the village found out that there was killer among them they set out in a mob to kill him. During their search in finding Chitondo they killed two of his friends, tortured his wife and threatened his mother. When they finally found Chitondo at hie girlfriend's house they threw rocks at him and he begged for his life. When the mob got him out of his girlfriend's hut "they stripped him naked and tied ropes to his wrist. The mob then takes turns, two at a time, dragging him miles on Christmas day even when he was already dead then they chopped him up and fed him to the dogs. And the most wicked thing of all was that they didn't think that what they did was wrong they thought that they were doing the right thing so they celebrated this.
Quote:
"Then the forest cleared and we were standing on a grassy knoll before a huge hill of thundering water, a long white curtain, a hundred yards long and a hundred high --it looked like God was dipping a paintbrush in the river.(Swiller141)
Reaction:
In this quotation from The Unheard Josh describes his path to a hidden waterfall. In this quote he uses descriptive words (adjectives), such as huge and long white, and he uses a simile to describe his surroundings. Throughout the book Josh describes his surroundings very clearly and he compares his experiences in Africa with other things such as God.

The Unheard pages 63-130
summary:
In the memoir the unheard by Josh Swiller, josh tries to get the well project started. The whole point of the peace corps sending him to that village was to develop well systems in Zambia. There he was supposed to help the villagers learn to fend for themselves instead of waiting for the rare volunteer. Josh set up a number of meetings to talk about how the villagers will build the wells but many of them were vacant.A lot of people who didn't go didn't have time and alot of them couldn't read the posters the meeting information was on. josh tried to start quick but time was going quicker. Though he soon found a village that looked promising, the village of kaseke, where there was a man, Jefferson, who knew how to speak English. The first meeting he set up had many villagers but when josh came he felt that there was a problem, and there was. the headman's mother died so they ask to have the meeting next Monday. At the second meeting it was also full but, that time there too was a problem. this time the headman's other mother, also known as aunt, died. The next meeting was scheduled for the next day. At the third meeting there was nobody there. as josh tries hard to complete his task he encounters many conflicts that deter him form moving forward. Later on at a peace corps meeting josh and the other Peace corp volunteer, who did less then him, were told that they were not expected to finish the task during there task. They were told that because they were the first peace corps volunteers there and that it would be almost impossible to complete their projects.
Besides the lack of audience in the well meeting, the political figures were also great discourages. all the politicians were drunks and apathetic. The latest chief of the village of Mununga was chosen randomly, before he became the chief he was a shovel operator, it was like jury duty if you were called to serve you had no choice. The new chief's first rule was the same as the last chief's rule, who was a school teacher. His first rule was "one bottle out of every batch of banana wine brewed in Mununga be tithed to him" the rule that cause the last chief to drink himself to death was being reestablished. Things such as these made Josh's project tougher to do. With everyone wanting more josh can give, he was slowed from his goal.
quote:
"I watched the students talk to each other in the cafeteria. Some threw signs like rapper, quick, harsh motions that had a bop and and an edge"(Swiller 99).
reaction:
My reaction towards Josh's writing is that because he grew up death he was probably used to hearing very specific descriptions, turning him into a very literate writer that uses devices such as similes.

Quote:
"Evening came and filled the shy with such reds and oranges it was like the valley had been slipped inside a sliced papaya."( Swiller 12)
Reaction:
As a writer od a memoir Josh protrays his writing with small clicks of personification, similes, metaphors and other literary devices. Though most of his writing involves alot of descriptions and thoughts he saw ans thought about. Swiller's quote above shows one of his clicks of similes he adds in. much of his work describes his difficulties with hearing and how alot of times after having someone repeat something a number of times he just guesses what thay are saying and nods. his writing technique includes a descriptive quality parts of his life with pieces of literary devices added in.
